28.06.2027 - 02.07.2027 ICF16 – 16th International Conference on Fracture

16th International Conference on Fracture – ICF16 Melbourne 2027

Structural Integrity for Sustainability & Circular Economy

From 28 June to 2 July 2027, the international fracture community will meet at RMIT University’s City Campus in Melbourne for ICF16. Often described as the “Olympics of Fracture Mechanics”, the quadrennial conference returns to Australia for the first time in 30 years and brings together researchers, engineers, industry specialists and early-career scientists from around the world.

Hosted by the International Congress on Fracture with the Australian Fracture Group, Engineers Australia and RMIT University, ICF16 combines leading research with practical questions of durability, safety and sustainable design. Plenary and honour lectures, parallel thematic symposia, mini-symposia, poster contributions, short courses and technical visits create space for both new scientific ideas and international cooperation.

Scientific scope

The programme spans fracture, fatigue, damage tolerance and structural integrity across materials and length scales, including:

  • advanced metals, composites, ceramics, polymers and biomaterials
  • computational, multiscale and data-driven fracture mechanics
  • hydrogen embrittlement, corrosion fatigue and high-temperature failure
  • additive manufacturing, non-destructive testing and structural health monitoring
  • applications in energy, transport, civil infrastructure, aerospace and biomedical engineering

Why it matters for the ESIS community

ICF16 offers ESIS Austria members an exceptional opportunity to present current work, follow developments across the full field of fracture and structural integrity, and build connections with an international technical community. The conference theme places our disciplines at the centre of longer component life, circular use of materials and more reliable engineering systems.
